“Molecular HIV Surveillance: A global review of human rights implications” provides a detailed explanation of what MHS is and how it is used across the globe, including how the technology works, where it is being conducted, and by whom. The paper describes growing human rights concerns relating to the use of this technology and goes on to list a number of recommendations for the use of MHS which were gathered from an international literature review and from members of the Expert Advisory Group.

Molecular HIV surveillance (MHS) is an umbrella term that describes a wide range of practices focused on the monitoring of HIV variants and the differences and similarities between them for scientific research, public health surveillance and intervention.

Through interviews in six countries – Kenya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam — Friends of the Global Fight examines how the HIV response contributed to country responses to COVID-19 and broader health systems.

The issue brief proposes that the HIV response offers a critical pathway towards robust, resilient, rights-based and people-centered health systems. The HIV response provides opportunities for pursuing ambitious disease-specific targets while advancing progress on broader health goals. The issue brief offers several recommendations for policy makers.

A new report is based on two private roundtables the Global Equality Caucus, in partnership with Gilead hosted to discuss inequities in HIV healthcare that LGBT+ people face and what elected representatives should be doing to push for improvements in theprovision of care.

The report includes ten recommendations for legislators and others to take forward, including repealing or modernising outdated HIV criminalisation laws, and doing more to safeguard health data privacy.

The report notes that HIV criminalisation laws are “out of step with modern scientific understanding and perpetuate outdated HIV stigmas.” Removing such laws would help to tackle prejudice and refocus HIV as a public health crisis.

This progress report of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is one in a series of thematic reports based on information submitted by reporting countries in 2020 on monitoring implementation of the Dublin Declaration on Partnership to Fight HIV/AIDS.

In 2020, 40 out of 55 countries in Europe and Central Asia provided the latest available data on all four stages of the continuum of HIV care (compared to 34 countries in 2018). A total of 45 countries were able to provide data for at least two consecutive stages of the continuum of HIV care (compared to 42 in 2018).

In 2014, the HIV Vaccines and Microbicides Resource Tracking Working Group and AVAC began a collaboration with the International AIDS Society’s (IAS) Towards an HIV Cure initiative. AVAC, Treatment Action Group (TAG) and the IAS brought together a group to review and allocate grants towards HIV cure research and analyze data on global funding. The working group released a report in July 2021, Global Investment in HIV Cure Research and Development in 2020.

No Data No More: Manifesto to Align HIV Prevention Research with Trans and Gender Diverse Realities, written and informed by trans and gender-diverse (TGD) global activists, with support and solidarity from AVAC, offers practical and essential priorities for demonstrable and viable HIV interventions for TGD people. The manifesto reflects the urgent need for peer-led HIV prevention research with true ownership and acceptability in TGD communities.

Addressing researchers, implementers, funders and advocates, recommendations in the manifesto for moving HIV and TGD research forward include:

The inclusion of the full range of the gender spectrum in clinical trials, with an emphasis on trans men;

Ensuring that efficacy and safety questions regarding on-demand oral PrEP for trans people on GAHT are resolved;

Ensuring that local research sites are funded to recruit TGD participants and follow the Good Participatory Practice Guidelines by engaging with the local LGBTQ community, including transgender-led organizations.

The UNAIDS Global AIDS Update 2021 highlights evidence that people living with HIV are more vulnerable to COVID-19, but that widening inequalities are preventing them from accessing COVID-19 vaccines and HIV services. The report shows how COVID-19 lockdowns and other restrictions have badly disrupted HIV testing—in many countries this has led to steep drops in HIV diagnoses, referrals to care services and HIV treatment initiations. Key populations and children continue to be left behind in access to HIV services.

The 2nd EMIS-2017 Community Report, published 27 November 2020, focuses on gay men living with HIV in Europe and is coordinated by Mick Quinlan (Gay Health Network, Dublin, Ireland). It has been translated into the seven most commonly spoken languages in Europe: German, Russian, French, Turkish, Italian, Polish, and Spanish, as well as into Arabic, Czech, and Portuguese. The 2nd community report was funded by Ireland's Health Services (HSE).
